The attached scientific consensus statement is intended to raise awareness among world leaders and the public in general
about critical environmental issues that need immediate attention in order to ensure a sustainable world over the next few
decades. The issues we highlight are climate disruption, extinctions, ecosystem loss, environmental contamination, and
human population growth and over-consumption.
There is a one-page executive summary attached, which gives the key points and which we suspect will be what most busy
people will read. There is also a longer document which summarizes the background and science relevant for sta ! people
and others that want to go deeper.
We are hoping that if you agree, you would be willing to be to indicate your agreement by signing the document (your name
would appear on the ’Signed by :" page). Signing instructions are at the end of this email.
Once we have accumulated a sufficient number of signatures of respected scientists who study global change issues, we
intend to present the document to world leaders. We have already been working with the California governor’s o"ce on
this, and are developing a strategy to launch it by the end of May.
If you are willing to help in this e !ort by signing the document to indicate your agreement, simply return this email, with
the information below filled in, to me (Tony Barnosky, email@example.com). Also feel free to contact me if you have
questions or want more background.
It would be most useful to have your response by MAY 10.
Many thanks for your help,
- Tony Barnosky (on behalf of all of us who helped draft the statement)
TO SIGN THE STATEMENT :
By providing my name, professional position, and institutional a"liation as noted below, I indicate that I agree that
concerted e !orts must begin immediately to halt climate disruption, extinctions, ecosystem loss, environmental
contamination, and human population growth and over-consumption. I agree that the best scientific evidence available
indicates that if we do not take action to immediately reverse these dangerous trends, the world of our children will be
substantially degraded with respect to what we have today.
