The attached scientific consensus statement is intended to raise awareness among world leaders and the public in general
about critical environmental issues that need immediate attention in order to ensure a sustainable world over the next few
decades. The issues we highlight are climate disruption, extinctions, ecosystem loss, environmental contamination, and
human population growth and over-consumption.
There is a one-page executive summary attached, which gives the key points and which we suspect will be what most busy
people will read. There is also a longer document which summarizes the background and science relevant for sta ! people
and others that want to go deeper.
We are hoping that if you agree, you would be willing to be to indicate your agreement by signing the document (your name
would appear on the ’Signed by :" page). Signing instructions are at the end of this email.
Once we have accumulated a sufficient number of signatures of respected scientists who study global change issues, we
intend to present the document to world leaders. We have already been working with the California governor’s o"ce on
this, and are developing a strategy to launch it by the end of May.
